  • Councillors to decide the fate of two Basildon charities in a public meeting tonight | Yellow Advertiser
to approve the cuts despite a report presented to councillors in November identifying high demand for advice services Basildon Council claims the three groups duplicate some of each other s services each helping service users to access services and benefits to which they are entitled However DIAL manager Jan Stevens said the charity offered specialist services such as home visits for people with mobility issues Mrs Stevens said the cut represented five per cent of the charity s total budget She said Depending on if we could replace the funding we could well end up cutting some of the services or the amount of time we are open Meanwhile Impact said the proposed cut to its funding would force it into closure In a statement managers said Impact has been advising the residents of Basildon on benefit issues since 1992 We are very sad that the council is transferring the funds to the Citizen s advice Bureau which will mean we will have to close especially at a time when we believe there is going to be a hgih demands for assistance due to the forthcoming benefit changes We are also saddened by the loss of funding for DIAL who also provide an important service for people with disabilities in Basildon A report by Basildon Council found DIAL and Impact were so popular that the former had waiting lists of up to four weeks and the latter up to seven Meanwhile the Citizens Advice Bureau is already able to deal with 80 per cent of service users within four days of first contact Mrs Larkin criticised Basildon Council for cutting funding for two small busy charities and giving money to an already well off service She said Don t cut services that people need I ve supported DIAL because it s needed out there and Impact is needed as well The council should leave the funding as it is It s a shame that we ve given them money and a lifeline and now we re not going to help them anymore I think it s a bad move to give it to the Citizens Advice Bureau At least the public have got a choice I m not saying we shouldn t give money to the Citizen s Advice Bureau because I know they do a good job but you can t cut other services to pay for it Especially not when you re buying the deputy mayor a new chain Tory council leader Phil Turner said he expected the council s Tory cabinet to follow officers advice at tonight s public meeting He said DIAL want to come in and speak tonight I m going to ask them if there s anything new they want to tell us because we ve rehearsed this now for some time and I don t want to waste anybody s time Both Impact and DIAL provide important services Nobody is denying that But this is about the council making sure things work best
