cut in from the touchline went past two Barking defenders before curling a wonderful twenty five yarder into the top corner The Blues went close again before the visitors hit the post but then doubled their lead thanks to a wonderful second goal again by Pop as again he cut inside and produced a great finish past Willis in off the post Barking were given a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty after a handball but Docker saw his spot kick saved FCR then struck the woodwork just before the break as they made their opponents chase shadows for the majority of the half Things got a lot harder for the hosts after the break when Elbi was given a second yellow and dismissed and then it was game over after another fabulous FC Romania goal Great movement on off the ball saw a cross dissect the Blues defenders and saw the visitors side foot home Barking grabbed a goal back though when after missing an easier chance to score Peagram was put through and sprinted clear of the FCR defence before producing a good finish Barking put in a valiant second half effort after the red card but Romania were just too good and are looking like the team to beat The Blues remain third eleven points behind the leaders now Basildon United 0 Ilford 3 The Foxes comfortably saw off a very below par Basildon side this evening at the Hive to move into fifth spot and only three points off the top three After a fairly niggly opening where each side had wayward efforts on goal the visitors got their noses in front 21 minutes when a free kick into the Bee s area fell to Karolis Atutis and he fired past Russell Harley and give the Foxes the lead Robert Clark fired over minutes later in a game where the Bees struggled to really create anything up front There was quite a lot of niggle but not much football being played in the first half hour but a great double save from Chris Clark kept the hosts in front and then five minutes later the Foxes doubled the lead when Wale Odedoyin burst into the box and slid the ball past Harley Basildon flew out of the traps in the first five minutes of the second half and saw Ben Sartain and Sipho Mtyanda go close but they were killed off on 53 minutes when Ilford broke on the hosts and saw Luke Thomas slid in and the visiting player duly fired past Harley emphatically at his near post A few naughty challenges from both sides added to the already niggly nature to this contest and things got worse for the hosts when keeper Harley was carried off after injury meaning they had to play half an hour with Daniel Howett an outfield player in goal A bad day at the office for the Bees sees them remain second although three points behind FC Romania

  • Crawford - “I don’t think Colchester will get beaten this time” Southend United v Colchester United (Saturday 3pm) - Preview #EssexDerby | Yellow Advertiser
during last weekends FA Cup tie with Spurs to suggest that Colchester have a decent chance saying Relating back to last Saturday against a top team like Tottenham I thought the U s were really good If they can put in a performance similar to that then they have a chance The ball seemed to run for Spurs all the time and that s what happens sometimes when you re down the bottom But you have to fight against it you just have to get out there and don t get caught in two minds And Crawford believed it would be the highflying hosts who might be a little more anxious on the day stating I think Southend might be under a bit more pressure They are playing a team who are having a bad time In their minds they will be expecting to walk all over Colchester But having seen what I saw last week there s a lot of spirit in the team I think the U s need to get out there and play their game It ll be no good sitting back and letting Southend come on to them They need to take the game to them and show them who s boss After playing in front of big crowds against both Southend and Spurs at the Weston Homes Stadium in recent weeks Crawford felt that the U s players would now be used to another sold out occassion If you go on last Saturday s performance in the cup definitely They weren t overawed by it at all Colchester played their game and took the game to Tottenham on several occasions With a bit more luck they might have grabbed another goal or two But the man whose goals helped famously sink Leeds United in 1971 was adamant that Colchester wouldn t leave the seaside empty handed saying Personally I don t think Colchester will get beaten this time I think they ll get a result but what result I don t know It s all down to the players what chances they make I definitely think they can come away with a draw Share this story LEGENDARY Colchester United striker Ray Crawford firmly believes his former charges have enough to take something from this weekends Sky Bet League One derby clash with Southend United at Roots Hall http www yellowad co uk article cfm id 110488 headline Crawford 20 2D 20 E2 80 9CI 20don E2 80 99t 20think 20Colchester 20will 20get 20beaten 20this 20time E2 80 9D 20Southend 20United 20v 20Colchester 20United 20 28Saturday 203pm 29 20 2D 20Preview 20 23EssexDerby sectionIs sport searchyear 2016 title Share by Email target blank Other Stories by Brian Jeeves Colchester fan runs 39 miles to Roots Hall to raise funds for son s rare condition COLCHESTER United super fan Tommy Leggett emotionally expressed his gratitude to rival supporters af Pennyfather It s there for Blues to take Southend United v Colchester United Saturday 3pm Preview EssexDerby

Hendrie and Leonard forced Leutwiler into a couple of smart blocks After going in at the break and arguably deserving to be three up and with just Atkinson s strike to show for their efforts the Blues were caught cold two minutes into the second period when they failed to clear Whalley s free kick and Mangan levelled from close range Having seen Noel Hunt hobble off only four minutes after the break his replacement Timlin only lasted 16 minutes after collecting two yellow cards Boss Phil Brown was then forced into a reshuffle with loanee Jamar Loza replacing the now sole striker Mooney and Sam McQueen on for the tiring Payne Southend then had to endure another Shrewsbury barrage with Bentley twice denying Akpro But as in the opening period Southend were back in front when Hendrie ghosted into the six yard box and guided home Loza s chipped pass to send the 231 travelling support wild By now a desperate Shrewsbury tried to get back in the game and last ditch Southend defending saw all ten men behind the ball with skipper Adam Barrett commanding at the back But with five minutes stoppage time to endure Southend had Adam Thompson to thank for denying Akpro a certain equalizer A delighted Brown said We had to dig the win out tonight It was never pretty and wasn t helped by Michael Timlin s sending off but the referee has booked Michael on the say so of the fourth official with the lad clutching his head Then Michael had gone in foolishly for the second yellow card But again we showed tremendous character That s the second game on the bounce where we have gone down to ten men and have come out winners That to me is a sign of spirit in the changing room After the sending off we changed tactics defending from the halfway line But when you re down to ten men and bringing on fresh legs and men who don t know the game in Jamar Loza and Sam McQueen they didn t half work hard We firmly believed fatigue would play a part The loan lads played their part but even without Tyrone Barnett up front we still started with three strikers But we lost Noel Hunt soon after the break with a back spasm and it was a quick early goal after the break that took the wind out of our sails a wee bit Brown concluded I think we have turned a corner The nil nil draw at Peterborough with Dan Bentley s penalty save was a key factor But I ve always thought this was going to be a big week After the FA Cup weekend we seem to be catching teams at the right time Timing is important if you want success The punters are now looking forward to Colchester on Saturday and it will be a great game for sure Matchwinner Hendrie added It was really tough out there
