  • West Ham hit back for Carrow Road point | Yellow Advertiser
a telling contact with Jerome s delicious centre But then just before the hour mark the hosts grabbed the lead Antonio was caught dawdling and Brady made him pay finding the net with a rasping strike via the underside of the bar Norwich were clearly buoyed by the goal and when Naismith s strike deflected into the path of Hoolahan the Republic of Ireland international midfielder swept neatly beyond Adrian to double the advantage West Ham were stunned but they gave themselves a lifeline when Dimitri Payet slid home from close range this after Ruddy could only parry Victor Moses low drive into his path And with their tails up West Ham drove forward in search of a second It was Norwich s turn to wobble and when the equalising goal duly came it was right out of the top draw Skipper Noble will rarely have struck a sweeter strike leaving a fully extended Ruddy helpless as the ball rocketed into the top corner of the net from fully twenty yards sending the Hammers support into raptures in the process The Hammers were now in the ascendancy Substitute Emmanuel Emenike struck over then Ruddy bravely dived at the strikers feet as he looked set to fire the visitors ahead Payet s free kick only found the grateful Ruddy s gloves as West Ham searched for a stoppage time winner while Nathan Redmond s deflected strike was a whisker away from earning the Canaries all three points Speaking after the match Hammers boss Slaven Bilic stated We are never happy with a point not at home or away But I have to praise the players for everything team spirit character resilience and also for the great quality that we showed after we went 2 0 down Credit to Norwich they play direct and with big energy But basically we gave them the first goal it was a gift The second goal we can say was an unlucky one but in the space of two or three minutes we find ourselves two down We showed a really great reaction But what sums the game up to me is that we didn t want the game to stop We wanted the game to continue more than Norwich They were desperate for a win and the three points That shows you that we have a really good side Meanwhile Canaries chief Alex Neil said I went through a mixture of emotions today I think our performance was better I think we were back to being on the front foot more in comparison to what we ve been recently That was concious decision in terms of our change of approach and going to try and attack the game I think it worked in our favour certainly when we were 2 0 up we were good value for it But the disappointing thing is that we ve let that lead slip West Ham United now turn their attention to the FA Cup visiting Ewood Park on

  • West Ham leave it late in cup cracker with Liverpool | Yellow Advertiser
and delivered Liverpool were clearly rattled by the goal and returned for the second period with renewed vigour And with their first meaningful venture forward they restored parity Angelo Ogbonna was late on Benteke and Coutinho fired the resulting dead ball low past Randolph much to the delight of some 3 000 travelling fans behind the goal West Ham appeared to be wobbling Sensing their chance boss Jurgen Klopp threw on Divock Origi and the returning Daniel Sturridge to bolster the Reds attacking threat Nevertheless it was the hosts who went close to regaining their advantage when Mignolet tipped over Antonio s troublesome centre And the Upton Park crowd were screaming for a penalty when Tiago Ilori appeared to haul back the marauding Valencia The end to end nature of the contest continued Benteke brought the best out of Randolph from a crisply struck free kick while Valencia should perhaps have done better nodding over Payet s delicious centre Hammers skipper Mark Noble warmed the palms of Mignolet with a speculative strike from distance while Randolph shovelled away Ibe s curling strike But the teams could not be separated and a extra time was required to see who travelled to Ewood Park a week Saturday Noble almost gave West Ham the lead in the extended period but a fully extended Mignolet pushed away while Benteke twice went desperately close for the Reds firing wide and then at the legs of the advancing Randolph Sturridge drove narrowly over after a probing run at what was now a tired Hammers back line while James Collins thwarted the former Chelsea man as he looked to snatch a late winner But with time rapidly running out West Ham grabbed a dramatic winner Ogbonna s thundering header had Mignolet beaten all ends up much to the delight of the raucous Boleyn crowd Speaking after the game a delighted Slaven Bilic stated I m down to earth and keep control of my emotions But I don t want to control them totally because it is a special night Of course tomorrow is a new day and we have to concentrate totally on Norwich But tonight there s no harm at all in saying it is a special night for our club I m so proud and happy for the players Ok it is only for the last sixteen But it was against Liverpool it s our last season at Upton Park and it s over 120 minutes We had injuries but we overcame all of that so this is why this game will go down in the history of one of the greatest nights and games for our club Despite the defeat Liverpool chief Jurgen Klopp was proud of his young side s effort saying I thought they could play like this I m not surprised But the only reason we were here tonight was to win West Ham United will now turn their attentions back to the Barclays Premier League when they visit Carrow Road

  • Southend United take derby bragging rights with late goals | Yellow Advertiser
to opening the hosts account nipping in ahead of the U s keeper but directing wide of the target Southampton loanee Sam McQueen was next to try his luck but once again the Roots Hall faithful were left frustrated as the effort was too high Blues were nearly made to pay for their wastefulness when Moncur s low drive was deflected over However the home side should have taken the lead when an unmarked McQueen nodded wide Will Atkinson s pinpoint centre There was a real sense of anxiety building amongst the home support Porter nearly silenced them further with a fizzing strike that was deflected behind then Elokobi s hooked shot landed on the roof of the rigging as Colchester continued to build a head of steam Barnett s low strike from distance was comfortably held by Parish while O Neil fired wide as the Blues desperately looked for a way through And with just under ten minutes remaining they made the breakthrough Substitutes Anthony Wordsworth fired low past Parish from all of twenty yards lifting the roof off Roots Hall in the process Buoyed by the goal Blues looked to make the game safe and with time running out they added a second Adam Barrett reacted the quickest to nod Payne s flag kick beyond the stranded Parish And in stoppage time Southend put the seal on the result Payne was thwarted by Brindley s last ditch challenge but the ball broke to McQueen who rolled into an empty net Speaking after the game a delighted Phil Brown said When they went down to ten men it galvanised them The message to the players at half time was patience Blues skipper Adam Barrett stated t was great to see the place packed the atmosphere was great We ve been down to ten men previously and were very had to break down We sensed the frustration but we knew if we stayed patient something would open up and thankfully it did When you get one you re in control It was a fantastic result To do the double over your rivals and more importantly where we are in the league that keeps us in a great position Blues opening goalscorer and former U s player Anthony Wordsworth said Obviously I ve been out for a long time now it was my first game back for over three months I ve only had one day training To be named on the bench was a surprise But for the gaffer and Cocho Graham Coughlan to put me on I think they deserve a lot of credit Colchester boss Kevin Keen cut a forlorn figure saying When you play with ten men it s tough especially for that long I m afraid it s another heroic failure The ten men were fantastic you probably wouldn t have known if you hadn t seen the sending off that it was eleven v ten I thought we were still very much in the game

  • All too easy for West Ham after Ayew madness | Yellow Advertiser
the former Nottingham Forest man was off target after Alex Song s trickery had teed him up And the home side continued to dominate with Tomkins firing wide after seizing on some sloppy Villa defending Just before the break Antonio s dead ball effort had Bunn scrambling across his goal but the Hammers left the field frustrated by the visitors resolute rearguard action The second period continued in very much the same pattern as that of the first Antonio and James Collins got each other s way with just Bunn to beat while skipper Noble s thundering volley drew a terrific save from the overworked keeper Little had been seen of Hammers play maker Payet but the Frenchman reminded everyone he was there with a thumping angled free kick which cannoned back off the outside of an upright But just before the hour mark West Ham grabbed the lead Antonio stooped to head Noble s glorious ball beyond Bunn much to the relief of the majority inside Upton Park The goal clearly settled the home side Song fired wide after a flowing Hammers move while Kouyate was unable to guide home after Payet s corner had been nodded on Cresswell was next to try his luck sending a fizzing strike agonisingly wide while Noble was also just off target as the Hammers looked to double their advantage Payet tested Bunn s resolve with a curling effort from just outside the box but with time running out West Ham secured the three points with a wonderfully worked goal Valencia broke quickly following a Villa corner racing the length of the field before playing in Kouyate who in turn fired high past the stranded Bunn In truth West Ham will scarcely enjoy a more comfortable ninety minutes Speaking after the game boss Slaven Bilic stated It s a massive win for us and I have nothing but praise for my players I would like to congratulate the Villa players for their fighting spirit and never giving up Unfortunately for them that moment of madness affected the game a lot After that we were much better They were sitting back and didn t even threat In the second half we played exactly the way our team should play We didn t panic we were patient we were very quick and dynamic without losing our composure Frustrated Villa manager Remi Garde stated To be fair the spirit that was shown by the ten players on the field was brilliant like it has been in the previous three or four games I think tonight if we d had the chance to see eleven players against eleven tonight then we could have earned something from the game When asked of his thoughts on Ayew s red card Garde said It will remain private between him and me what I have to say to him West Ham United are next in Barclays Premier League action on Saturday February 6 when they travel to St Mary s Stadium
